Mathematics Department

Michelle

Director

Michelle holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Bioengineering with a dual major in Nanotechnology and Drug Design and Development, and a Masters’ Degree from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from the National University Health System. Her first love is teaching, which she has been doing for more than a decade.

As one of the founding teachers of AfterSkool, Michelle is responsible for curriculum planning and material design for Year 1 to 6 Mathematics. In her classes, she kindles her students’ interest in the subject through her fast and effective methods of learning Mathematics.

Jimmy

Jimmy holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences from Nanyang Technological University. He has been teaching in the private education sector for over a decade. Currently in AfterSkool, he teaches Year 3 to 6 Mathematics, including O and A-Level Mathematics, as well as the IBDP curriculum. Jimmy has always been passionate about teaching since his Junior College days and often shows his enthusiasm for teaching Mathematics.

He strongly believes that Mathematics is fun to learn and works with his students to understand Mathematics through various explanations and interactive approaches. In his classes, he pushes students to think and learn about new concepts and is determined to help them improve.

Jessie

Jessie holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics from Nanyang Technological University, and possesses more than 10 years of experience in providing private education. She teaches ‘O’ Levels, ‘A’ Levels, and IBDP at AfterSkool, and is the coordinator for Year 3 and Year 4 Mathematics, where she designs lesson plans and coordinates the creation of lesson materials.

Jessie possesses an amiable character that naturally endears her to her students, which allows her to lead them to a strong understanding of the concepts that she teaches. Her teaching philosophy is based on having clear communication and accountability in her classes, which she uses to push her students to the best of their potential.

Clarice

Clarice holds a BSc in Mathematical Sciences from Nanyang Technological University and specialises in teaching O-Level Mathematics. Her teaching approach focuses on building strong foundations using relatable analogies and visually engaging, colour-coded explanations. By connecting concepts across various topics, Clarice empowers students to think critically and solve problems with confidence.

Her amiable personality creates a supportive and encouraging classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring mathematical ideas. Her focus on clarity and connection fosters a love for learning and encourages students to excel in their mathematical journey.

Jonathon

Jonathon graduated from the University of London with a BSc degree in Accounting and Finance. Realising his passion for teaching during his Junior College days, Jonathon has since accumulated 7 years of teaching experience in the private education sector and specialises in Year 1 to 4 Mathematics.

Jonathon firmly believes that every student has the ability to master Math with adequate effort and proper guidance. He excels at breaking down abstract concepts clearly, and encourages students to develop critical problem solving skills through his teaching methods.

Aaron

Aaron has over 12 years of teaching experience, excelling in scaffolding concepts and anticipating students' common pain points to deliver targeted and effective instruction. His warmth and approachable personality creates a supportive and engaging learning environment where students thrive.

With an intuitive approach that ensures personalized attention, Aaron fosters a love for learning and caters to individual needs. Dedicated to his students' improvement and success, he builds lasting connections through genuine care and empathy, guiding both struggling learners and high-achievers.

Ye Kai

Ye Kai holds a Bsc (Hons) in Mathematics and Economics from the National University of Singapore. He currently specialises in teaching Year 4 to Year 6 ‘O’, ‘A’ Level and IBDP Mathematics. Ye Kai takes a critical-thinking approach to Mathematics and focuses on the central ideas behind every method of problem solving.

Ye Kai’s philosophy is that anyone can learn Mathematics through conceptual understanding, which he communicates to his students by breaking down complicated problems into bite-sized tasks. His approachable and energetic personality allows him to build a strong rapport with his students, encouraging them to work towards their goals.

Humphrey

Humphrey holds a BSc (Hons) in Mathematical Sciences from Nanyang Technological University and has 5 years of experience teaching Year 1 to Year 6 Mathematics. His teaching approach revolves around identifying the key concepts of each topic and helping students understand the connections between topics to build a rigorous foundation in Mathematics.

With a strong focus on developing critical thinking skills and question-answering techniques, Humphrey ensures that his students are fully equipped to experience the joy of learning Mathematics.

Chemistry Department

Alex Jesse

Alex graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from National University of Singapore. Alex is a joyful and encouraging teacher with a huge passion for Chemistry and a sincere heart for his students. From a young age, he knew that he wanted to inspire students to reach greater heights and help them unleash their full potential.

Before joining AfterSkool, Alex has gained much experience from teaching in the private sector since 2015. Alex specialises in teaching O-Level and A-Level Chemistry. He never fails to dedicate extra time to support his students, and he sincerely believes in the potential of every student, regardless of their background.

Ben

Ben graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons) in Environmental Earth Systems Science from Nanyang Technological University. His interdisciplinary major equipped him with a wide range of skills in the sciences. While a former Teaching Assistant in his undergraduate days, Ben has been teaching Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry in the private sector for more than 7 years.

At AfterSkool, Ben specialises in Year 3 and Year 4 Physics and Chemistry. He believes that learning about the sciences can be an enjoyable and enriching experience by integrating abstract theories with real-world examples so that students can retain meaningful knowledge.

Kelly

Kelly graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from the National University of Singapore. Having taught in the private education sector since 2013, she is aware that mastering Chemistry takes a great deal of understanding and practice, and she strives to help her students excel in this subject.

At AfterSkool, Kelly teaches H2 and HL Chemistry for the ‘A’ Levels and IB examinations. She focuses on helping students understand the root of concepts and navigate phrasing differences, enabling them to arrive at the correct answer and avoid common mistakes.

 

Gerald

Gerald graduated from the National University of Singapore with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Chemistry. Prior to joining AfterSkool, Gerald taught over 60 students of varying academic abilities and backgrounds for 7 years in the private education sector. Gerald currently teaches Chemistry for both 'A' Levels and IBDP.

As a former undergraduate and teaching assistant in NUS, Gerald learnt and applied new teaching methods for Chemistry lessons, significantly improving the understanding and grades of his students. At AfterSkool, Gerald continues to employ creative yet effective ways to make his lessons engaging, enabling students to learn better.

Balaji

Balaji graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons) in Biology from the National University of Singapore in 2003. He went on to complete his Post Graduate Diploma in Education (Biology and Chemistry) in 2005, and his Master of Education degree from Monash University, Australia in 2008.

He has a special love for Chemistry as the ‘science of everything’, and firmly believes that understanding Chemistry, while challenging at times, enables a student to excel in all the other sciences.

Ray

Ray graduated with BSc (Hons) in Chemistry from National University of Singapore. He teaches Chemistry at IBDP, IP, GCE ‘A’ & ‘O’ Levels. Drawing on his experience as a graduate of IBDP from ACS (Independent), Ray has successfully coached many IBDP students from various IB World Schools in Singapore since 2013.

His classes are highly interactive and include open dialogues between teacher and students to facilitate student learning and engagement. Ray’s flair for relating Chemistry concepts to other disciplines such as Mathematics, Biology, and Physics helps students gain a macro understanding of the field of science.

Biology Department

Evonne

Deputy Director

Evonne holds a BSc in Life Sciences (Concentration in Biomedical Science) from the National University of Singapore, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education (NIE). A former MOE teacher, she spent 6 years teaching Biology and Science before leaving the service in 2014 to head the Biology department in AfterSkool.

Evonne specialises in teaching O-Level, A-Level, and IBDP Biology. Her classes are designed to engage students, ignite their passion for the subject, and help them grasp complex concepts and retain content knowledge through the effective use of analogies and mnemonics.

Navinah

Navinah holds a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science with a double major in Anatomy and Human Biology, as well as Pathology and Laboratory Medicine from the University of Western Australia. Having had at least 6 years of tutoring experience in Biology, Chemistry, and Lower Secondary Mathematics in the private sector. Navinah tailors her teaching to each student's needs by actively listening to their questions and paying close attention to their unique challenges.

Incredibly passionate about teaching Biology, Navinah incorporates study tips in her lessons, breaking down complex concepts into digestible sizes to help her students better understand and retain the material. She finds great fulfillment in seeing her students thrive and aims for them to enjoy learning, as this enthusiasm helps them excel in their studies.

Kelvin

Kelvin holds a BSc in Microbiology from the National University of Singapore and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the National Institute of Education (NIE). A former MOE teacher, Kelvin taught in secondary school for over 10 years and considers it a privilege to have been able to instruct and mentor his students.

At AfterSkool, he cherishes the opportunity to work closely with students in smaller classes, allowing him to better address their academic needs and understanding. He strives to promote a love for the subject and help his students improve.

Physics Department

Kok Soon

Kok Soon graduated from the National University of Singapore with a BEng (Highest Distinction) in Civil Engineering and a minor in Management. After working in an engineering consultancy firm for several years, he is currently pursuing his PhD at NUS, where he discovered his passion for teaching.

Prior to joining AfterSkool, he also had several years of teaching experience in the private education sector. He actively listens to students' questions and makes complicated concepts easier for them to grasp.

Jerome

Jerome graduated with a BSc Physics (Hons) from Nanyang Technological University. He has 2 years of teaching experience in the private education sector, and has helped many Secondary and JC students to score distinctions in Physics.

At AfterSkool, Jerome teaches Lower Secondary Science and Mathematics, O-Level Physics, and A-Mathematics. He strives to help his students develop a keen passion for Physics and excel in their exams.

Alex

Alex has over 10 years of experience teaching Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, in tuition centres, renowned schools, and junior colleges, He draws on his experiences as a triple-science and gifted programme student to design lessons that are intuitive, engaging, and relevant to today’s student.

Ben

Ben graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree (Hons) in Environmental Earth Systems Science from Nanyang Technological University. Chun Guan

Chun Guan graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Singapore, where he received the IEEE Power Engineering Chapter Prize in 2005.

With nearly two decades of experience in teaching Primary and Secondary Mathematics and Sciences, Chun Guan emphasises on the importance of problem-solving and views mistakes as valuable learning opportunities, helping students uncover their own understanding more effectively.

 

Humanities and Languages Department

Jit

English language

Jit holds a Master's degree from the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland and has extensive experience teaching students ranging from primary level to junior colleges, bringing a wealth of knowledge and versatility to his teaching practice.

Jit combines his expertise in argumentative writing with his flair for oratorical speech as a popular debate instructor for a number of MOE schools and enrichment centres, including coaching Singapore’s national debate team.

Well-versed in the latest methodologies in teaching English, Jit employs creative and effective methods to keep his students engaged and focused, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for the language through actionable strategies that support their academic journeys.

Yaxuan 亚璇老师

Chinese language

Yaxuan majored in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages ​​in college and is a graduate of the renowned Confucius Institute programme in Beijing. Not only has she mastered the knowledge of Chinese linguistics, but she has also deeply studied the concepts of cross-cultural communication and education and teaching.

With 5 years of experience teaching students of different nationalities, Yaxuan excels at connecting learning content with students' daily lives, making abstract language knowledge come alive through vivid and interesting examples. 

Known for her gentle and meticulous teaching style, Yaxuan excels at guiding students through active exploration, encouraging them to identify and solve problems through communication and critical thinking. Her goal is for every student to thrive in a dynamic and engaging Chinese class.
